Ukrainian confectionery tycoon Petro Poroshenko is on course for victory in the country’s crucial presidential election, according to exit polls.
One poll put the 48-year-old on 55.9%, while a second gave him 57.3%, according to news agency Reuters.
The projections put pro-EU Poroshenko well ahead of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is in second place with 12.9%.
If these exit polls are confirmed by results on Monday, this outcome would avert the need for a runoff vote next month.
The National Exit Poll 2014, conducted by a consortium of Democratic Initiative, the Kiev International Sociology Institute (KMIS) and the Razumkov Ukrainian Centre for Economic and Political Research, had an error margin of 3.5 percent.
