The highest-placed female coach in European men’s football was presented to the media on Thursday.
Portuguese Helena Costa has been appointed coach of French second division club Clermont Foot.
In her first press conference the 36-year-old said she hoped her appointment has paved the way for other female coaches but mainly she hopes she will be judged on her performance, not her gender.
‘‘I know it’s an important day, and it can open other doors, or not, or not, but we are in 2014, so I understand your surprise and the quantity of Press and the impact that had, but (it) should be a normal thing. So I understand, but look at me as a normal coach,” said the Portuguese national.
This is not Costa’s first venture into football.
She previously coached the Iran and Qatar national women’s teams, Benfica’s men’s youth team and has also been a scout for Scottish champions Celtic.
