Six Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and another eight wounded after their armoured column was ambushed as it approached a bridge near the eastern town of Kramatorsk.
Two of the solders died when their armoured car was hit, and four others died in the ensuing exchange of fire, according to the defence ministry in Kyiv.
It is the worst loss of life for regular army forces since the crisis began.
Pro-Russian separatists are being blamed for the attack.
