French troops patrolling the streets of the Central African Republic’s capital Bangui have found the body of a photojournalist in a car they had stopped to search.
Camille Lepage, 26, is the first western journalist to be killed in the country since France sent in troops in December.
Lepage had been based in South Sudan since July 2012, and sold her photos to a number of news outlets. Colleagues in Bangui said she had been in the country several months and was travelling near the country’s border with Cameroon when she was caught in fighting.
She had recently been selected for a prestigious New York Times portfolio review and workshop. French President François Hollande said she had been murdered in a statement released on Tuesday.
