Ukraine pro-Russian separatists seize hostages, accuse nationalists of cowardice

OSCE observers were taken hostage on Friday, in a conflict they had tried to calm, by pro-Russian separatists of Sloviansk, who accused them of spying for NATO. Swiss RTS

Sloviansk’s former mayor has disappeared. Kyiv no longer controls the city. The Ukrainian army offensive was the reason Moscow and the separatists gave for annulling the Geneva agreement. Sloviansk has a new strongman running it. France 2

Pro-Russian demonstrations in the region abounded on the 1 May. People seemed to rally behind the pro-Russian separatist cause. Russian RTR television focuses on the perceived threat of the Ukrainian nationalist paramilitary collective known as the Right Sector.
