More than 1,100 migrants have reportedly been rescued off Italy’s coast over the Easter holiday weekend.
The country is a gateway into Europe for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, often in overcrowded, flimsy boats.
It has stepped up naval and air patrols since hundreds drowned last year near the island of Lampedusa.
