Tough desert day for the runners in the Marathon Des Sables

Day one of stage four of the 28th edition of the Marathon Des Sables the 37 kilometres between Oued Moungarf and Ba Hallou in Morocco.

The stage, which includes the ascent of Djebel Hills, is expected to take the elite runners less than 10 hours but it is a gruelling journey for the rest who are allowed a maximum of 34 hours to complete it.

Morocco’s Rachid El Morabity leads the race with a 22 second lead over compatriot Abdelkader Elmouaziz in the overall standings.

Reigning champion Mohamad Ahansal is third overall a further two minutes back.
