Jamaican sprinter Simpson handed 18-month ban for doping

Former Olympic relay champion Sherone Simpson has been suspended for 18 months after testing positive for a banned stimulant during last summer’s Jamaican trials.

The 29-year-old was one of five athletes to test positive at trials.

Olympic discus thrower Allison Randall recieved a two-year ban while Simpson’s training partner and former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell will hear his verdict on Thursday.

Although Simpson has blamed a supplement provided by her Canadian trainer for the positive test a Jamaican anti-doping panel voted unanimously that as an elite athlete she was “negligent in all the circumstances”.

Her suspension – as well as Randall’s – has been backdated to June 21 of last year, the date they provided their samples.

The ban means Simpson and Randall will miss the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.
