Four-time champion Tiger Woods will miss the Masters after having surgery on a pinched nerve in his back.
A statement on the world number one’s website said the surgery was a success but he had failed to “make the necessary progress” to play at Augusta and would need rest for the “next several weeks”.
The American has endured a number of injury problems over the last six years, missing two Opens, a US Open and a PGA Championships but has played in every Masters since making his debut as an amateur in 1995.
Woods, who won his first Masters in 1997, will join girlfriend Lindsey Vonn on the sidelines as she is still recovering from a serious knee injury suffered in last February’s World Championships in Austria.
