The Judo Grand Prix in Samsun Turkey got underway on Friday and Russia’s Irina Dolgova won the -48 kilo title after she beat Ukraine’s Maryna Cherniak by ippon, four seconds shy of the two-minute mark.
Current World Champion, Majlinda Kelmendi highlighted her status as top dog when she beat Italian Odette Giuffrida to win the -52 kilo class.
22-year-old Kelmendi totally dominated her opponent and with two waza-ari half points reinforced her position at the top of the World Ranking.
The first male final of the opening day saw Beslan Mudranov of Russia edge past Yeldos Smetov of Kazakhstan to reign supreme in the -60 kilo division.
In a tight affair Mudranov opened the score with a waza-ari and added a yuko before sealing the gold with an o-uchi-gari for ippon.
The second male final of the day saw an all French battle for the -66 kilo title.
In another tight tussle David Larose left it late to beat compatriot Loic Korval courtesy of an uchi mata.
