Ice hockey: Znarok unveiled as new Russia coach

Oleg Znarok was unveiled as Russia’s new national ice hockey coach on Friday.

The 51-year-old Latvian replaces Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, who stepped down following Russia’s embarrassing performance at this year’s Sochi Olympics where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Finland.

The former Dynamo Riga centre enjoyed a playing career spanning 20 years and as coach Znarok steered Dynamo Moscow to the last two Kontinental Hockey League titles.

His first game in charge with Russia will be against Switzerland in May’s world championships.
