Wildcat miners clash with police in Peru over government crackdown

Illegal miners and police have clashed in Peru over a government crackdown on unauthorised gold mining.

Police launched tear gas canisters at protesters, who threw them back. Protesters overturned a car at one point during the demonstration.

There have been numerous protests since the miners’ equipment was seized by the authorities.

Wildcat mining has been blamed for reducing rain forests to toxic deserts and for polluting rivers with mercury to isolate gold.
