China's state visit to France ends in Versailles pomp and ceremony

In France, a massive security operation failed to prevent a protest against the visit of China’s President Xi Jinping and the country’s human rights record.

But the convoy drawn up by Reporters without Borders was mostly kept outside of the centre of the French capital.

Xi is on the final day of his three-day tour of France. He has already visited the south eastern city of Lyon and shortly afterwards arrived in Paris to sign crucial business deals.

France is seeking tighter business links to the world’s number two economy in a bid to boost its own beleaguered finances.

The presidential pair oversaw a series of industrial tie-ups worth an estimated 18 billion euros involving Dongfeng, Peugeot-Citroen and Airbus.

The other highlight was an accord involving French energy firms EDF, Areva and China General Nuclear.
