Brazil has passed groundbreaking legislation aimed at guaranteeing the protection and privacy of internet users.

It states that companies collecting data on Brazilian users must obey the country’s privacy and data protection laws even if the data is held on servers abroad.

The move follows spying allegations leveled against US security agencies.

The bill known as the “Internet constitution” was approved on Tuesday night, though it still must pass the Senate before becoming law.
