The designer of the Centre Pompidou Museum in Metz, France, architect Shigeru Ban, has won the coveted 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize.

Known for his airy modernist designs and humanitarian work, Ban is the second successive architect from Japan to win the 73,000 euro prize.

Ban is celebrated for his creative use of low cost materials.

The Pritzker award was created by the late Jay A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy, in 1979 to honour the world’s most innovative architects.
