Daleen Hassan, euronews:
“Joining us is Mohammed Shaikhibrahim, our correspondent in Cairo. Tell us about reaction to the verdict and if more rulings are expected in the coming days?”

Mohammed Shaikhibrahim, Cairo:
“There is no doubt that it’s a shocking decision and a landmark ruling in the history of Egyptian justice.

‘The first reaction was that the decision will increase fear amongst Egyptians. There is a lot of tension and anger – especially for the families of the convicted people in Al-Minya. There is a huge police and security presence in Al-Minya after the verdicts.

‘People are astonished and angry about the decisions.”

Daleen Hassan, euronews:
“Do you think the verdict might result in revenge against the authorities and police?”

Mohammed Shaikhibrahim, Cairo:
“Yes, we may see revenge attacks against police and government buildings. We’re talking about an escalation of violence. There will be no peace if any of these death sentences are enforced.”

Daleen Hassan, euronews:
“Egypt is getting ready for presidential elections. How far will this decision affect the elections especially if Field Marshall Fatal Al-Sisi runs?”

Mohammed Shaikhibrahim, Cairo:
“If the death penalties are enforced, it will probably affect the political situation.

‘Egyptians do not want the violence to increase, but I think the verdict will affect the presidential elections in a negative way. It will increase political tension.”
