German Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Although teammate Lewis Hamilton made a stuttery start from pole only to retire shortly afterwards, Rosberg made a brilliant start from third to take the lead after the first turn.
He didn’t look back from then on as he took the chequered flag for his fourth career victory, whilst also underlining his team’s superior preparations for a season full of dramatic technical rule changes.
Red Bull’s Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo was second but was later disqualified for a fuel flow irregularity.
McLaren’s Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen was promoted to second place and teammate Jenson Button to third.
Ferrari’s two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was fourth while world champion Sebastian Vettel retired early on with engine problems.
The next race takes place in Malaysia in a fortnight.
