Ukraine rival rallies end in deadly clash in Donetsk

At least two people have died and dozens more have been injured after rival Ukrainian protesters clashed in Donetsk.

In the worst outbreak of violence since last month’s overthrow of the Moscow-backed president, hundreds of pro and anti-government demonstrators faced off in the city.

Organisers of the pro-EU rally, which also denounced Russia’s movements in Crimea, said two men killed were from their group.

As police tried in vain to keep the two sides apart, sporadic fights broke out around the central Lenin Square and its surrounding streets as the demonstrators began to disperse.

Donetsk is the main city in Ukraine’s Donbass industrial heartland, close to the Russian border.
