After being closed off to the public for twelve years, a few visitors are now being allowed to see Spain’s prehistoric Altamira cave paintings.
On Thursday, five visitors to the nearby museum had their names picked out of a draw to be allowed into the caves.
They were dressed in protective clothing to stop any contamination of the site.
More small groups of people will be allowed to see the paintings in weekly visits until August. Sensors will monitor any changes in the cave’s temperature, to determine if more visitors can be allowed in the future.
