Egypt’s interim Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi, has announced the resignation of the country’s government. The unexpected move, broadcast live on television, comes in the middle of a series of strikes by public sector workers. He said that he had informed the interim President Adly Mansour, however gave no reason for the decision.
The move could pave the way for popular army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to declare his candidacy for president. In order to do that he would need to give up his role as defense minister, a move he is widely expected to do.
According to the country’s new constitution approved in January, an election must take place by mid-April. Field Marshal Sisi could, without any serious rival in the electoral race, become Egypt’s next head of state.
