Lionel Messi and Dani Alves both hit the mark to hand Barcelona a 2-0 win over a ten-man Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at the Etihad Stadium.
Messi converted from the spot eight minutes after the break after being taken down by City defender Martín Demichelis, who was shown a red card for his challenge.
Alves then sealed the victory in the 90th minute.
Elsewhere Paris Saint Germain put one foot in the quarter-finals following a 4-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen.
Blaise Matuidi opened up the scoring after just three minutes.
Sweden international and Ligue 1’s top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit twice just before half-time while winter signing Yohan Cabaye struck the fourth with two minutes remaining.
The crucial return legs take place March 12.
