Champions League: Arsenal ready for Bayern challenge

Arsenal resume their Champions League campaign on Wednesday against reigning Champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of the last-16 at the Emirates

Coach Arsene Wenger believes his side will be boosted by Sunday’s FA Cup fifth round win over Liverpool – a side that thrashed the Gunners in the league 5-1 earlier in the month.

The Frenchman said: “I think we are in much better mental shape than we were one year ago because we lost against Blackburn (Rovers) at home in the FA Cup and it was a big disappointment for us, this time we won against Liverpool and we are really determined of course to win this game tomorrow.”

Arsenal and Bayern met at the same stage in last year’s competition with the Bavarians squeezing through on away goals.

Bayern have carried over their impressive treble-winning form from last season into this one and under new coach Pep Guardiola the club are enjoying a dazzling run of form.

The Germans have lost only once in 34 games heading into the encounter in London and have won 19 and drawn twice from their 21 Bundesliga matches so far.
