He’s the latest musical sensation from Down Under to take the global music scene by storm.
After hitting number one spot in his native Australia with his single ‘Riptide’, singer-songwriter Vance Joy has achieved top 10 status in the UK and is now touring the rest of Europe.
“It’s been a bit of a crazy few months,” said the young artist. “I’ve been doing a lot of touring in Australia. I guess when you’re in Australia, which is really remote from the UK, you hear really good things and my manager updates me about the progress of the song, and (…) he was like, ‘It’s in the top 10,’ and I was like, ‘That’s pretty good right?’ And he’s like, ‘Yes it’s really good,’ and I was like, ‘Cool’.”
The song’s popularity isn’t just down to Joy’s infectiously catchy folk sound and clever lyrics – it comes with a captivating video which has been viewed over five million times on YouTube.
The artist believes the internet has a lot to do with his and other Antipodean artists’ success.
“Maybe it is because you can just instantly listen to music all around and I guess people aren’t restricted to listening to the music within their own little section of the world. It’s kind of like a whole open field of music you can just sample from and listen to and get inspired by and then contribute to as well,” said Joy.
He is currently touring Europe with concerts in cities including London, Berlin, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Joy’s album is due out later this year.
