South African gold miners refuse to be rescued fearing arrest

Text size Aa Aa

Around a dozen illegal gold miners have been rescued after being trapped down an abandoned mine in South Africa.

An unknown number remain underground – possibly as many as 200 – but they are refusing to leave fearing they face arrest.

Food and water have been sent down but a rescue operation will only restart if the men request it.

The men are believed to have been trapped since Saturday but there are no reports of injuries.
