Velensek downs Malonga in Paris

Slovenia’s Anamari Velensek clinched the -78 kilo class with victory over local hope Madeleine Malonga at the Paris Grand Slam on Sunday.

The 22-year-old dominated the contest and sealed top spot after just 28 seconds with a superb ippon.

The bronze medals were won by France’s Audrey Tcheumeo and Marhinde Verkerk of the Netherlands.

In the +100 kilo category, Ryu Schichinohe celebrated his first Grand Slam triumph with victory over Tashkent Grand Prix bronze medallist David Moura.

The Japanese judoka produced a solid display which ended after just 13 seconds thanks to a well taken uchi-mata.

Meanwhile, World Judo Masters bronze medallist Cyrille Maret held his nerve to outclass Lukas Krpalek of the Czech Republic in the -90kg final.

Krpalek was on the brink of victory but carelessly threw the gold away in the dying moments.

The bronze medals were won by Russia’s Adlan Bisultanov and Henk Grol of the Netherlands.
