A fuel train carrying tanks of natural gas has derailed in Pozdino in the Novovyatsky district of Kirov. Around a dozen of the tanks ignited causing a major fire.
Around 500 residents have been evacuated from the area.
Many locals fear gas poisoning and are keeping their windows closed.
Nikita Belykh, Kirov Oblast’s acting governor, said that his team is testing the local water supply every 15 minutes to check if it is safe. So far, everything is normal.
Emergency services have been battling to contain the blaze for hours including fire trains and a helicopter.
More than 10 passenger trains, including two international trains have been delayed for several hours.
There have been no reports of casualties.
