Police in Brazil say filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho’s son has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing his father to death.
The 80-year-old was killed at his home. His wife Maria, 62, was injured.
Their son Daniel Coutinho, 41, reportedly suffers from mental illness and is believed to have carried out both attacks before trying to commit suicide.
The filmmaker’s sister was told about it by the couple’s other son.
“For us it was an enormous shock. Because we never know what things happen inside a family, the difficulties of living together,” Eloisa de Oliveira Coutinho said.
It is thought that Eduardo Coutinho’s wife managed to take refuge in the bathroom of their flat in Rio during the attack and phone the couple’s other son.
Police say Daniel Coutinho also suffered knife wounds after trying to stab himself.
“He (Daniel Coutinho) committed these atrocities and then knocked on the door of the neighbour’s, not making sense and said the following: ‘I freed my father, I tried to free my mother and myself but I didn’t manage to’,” said Rivaldo Barbosa, Director of Rio’s Homicide Department.
Both mother and son are being treated in the same hospital.
Eduardo Coutinho was seen as one of Brazil’s best documentary makers, focusing on the lives of ordinary people.
President Dilma Rousseff said the country had lost its greatest screenwriter.
