Parts of Austria are on the highest alert for avalanches amid some of the worst snow conditions for 15 years.
In the south at least two people died – one as he drove a snowplough, another fell into a swollen river.
Many trains were cancelled, and with more snow forecast over 1,000 soldiers were put on standby, with five helicopters ready for rescue operations.
