Heavy rain has continued to lash central and northern Italy.

In Rome people were forced onto roofs to escape flooding, a woman about to give birth was taken to hospital in a dinghy, and homeless immigrants were rescued from makeshift huts.

The River Tiber, said to be in danger of overflowing, has been closely monitored.

The River Arno in Florence was said to be at a 20-year-high. A thousand people were moved from their homes near Pisa.
