As the world of film gears up for the ultimate distinctions with the Oscars, the Razzies will be rewarding the worst in cinema.
Top of this year’s worst movies is Adam Sandler’s comedy ‘Grown Ups 2’ with a total of eight nominations, including Worst Picture and Worst Actor.
The US actor could soon hold the dubious record of winning three Razzies in a row.
But, if it’s any consolation, he is not alone.
“Other Worst Picture nominees include ‘The Lone Ranger’, which Disney admits lost $200 million (laughs),” says John Wilson, the founder of the Razzies.
Starring Johnny Depp, who is up for his first ever Razzie for his role as Tonto, ‘The Lone Ranger’ received multiple nominations, including Worst Picture and Worst Director.
Easing the pain, ‘The Lone Ranger’ is also nominated for an Oscar, for Best Makeup.
But one movie seems to have received near unanimous negative reviews:
“The one that seems to be in the forefront in the categories its in is ‘After Earth’. We’re saying it’s Will Smith and Jaden Smith on Planet Nepotism. It’s a movie that Will Smith put together to foist his child on the public. Cost $130 million. Didn’t even make $60 million,” says John Wilson.
M Night Shyamalan’s futuristic post-apocalyptic tale ‘After Earth’ got a total of six Razzie nominations.
The Razzies or Golden Raspberry Awards will be announced on 1 March, on the eve of the Academy Awards.
