Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Spain international Juan Mata from Chelsea for a club record fee of 37.1 million pounds(45 million euros).
The 25-year-old playmaker is almost 6.5 million pounds (7.8m euros)more expensive than the club’s previous record transfer of Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham in 2008.
Mata had a medical at Old Trafford on Saturday and has reportedly signed a four-and-a-half year contract.
He was voted Chelsea’s best player for the past two seasons but became surplus to requirements under new boss Jose Mourinho.
A move to United will guarantee more playing time and with it increased hopes of a national selection for this summer’s World Cup.
His first match for United is likely to be Tuesday night’s Premier League game against Cardiff.
