Ribery and Benzema trial begins

The trial of Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema began in Paris this week with both France internationals facing a possible three-year prison sentence for having sex with an underage prostitute.

Neither player was present in court.

Ribery and Benzema also face fines of up to 45,000 euros each if found guilty on the charges of paying Zahia Dehar for sex while she was under 18.

Since the scandal erupted Dehar – who is now 21 – has established herself in the world of fashion and with the help of Karl Largerfeld has created her own line of luxury lingerie.

In Ribery’s case, Dehar was allegedly 17 at the time and 16 when she met up with Benzema.

Ribery – who plays for Bayern Munich – admits to having had sex with Dahar in Munich, but strongly denies he knew how old she was, while Real Madrid’s Benzema denies the encounter in a Paris hotel even happened.

Although in France the age of consent is 15, paying for sex with anyone under 18 is a criminal offense.

The trial is expected to last until Thursday.
