Around 250 mostly sub-Saharan migrants tried to scale fences into Spain’s northwest African enclave city of Melilla on Monday. Fifty made it onto European soil.
In a separate incident 13 migrants tried to reach the enclave in an inflatable boat but were intercepted by police. After jumping into the sea one of them drowned.
Melilla is surrounded by Morocco and the Mediterranean. Migrants hoping to get to Europe camp on the Moroccan side, with several thousand trying each year to enter Melilla.
