Eurovision song contest winner and political activist Ruslana joined her fellow Ukrainians at a Brussels show of support for protesters in Kiev on Tuesday.

Ruslana denounced the country’s new tough laws on demonstrations, which make anti-government protests virtually impossible. She also called for an investigation into the finances of President Victor Yanukovych and Ukraine’s top politicians.

“All of this corrupt money should be immediately checked and all these financial assets frozen. Sanctions should be introduced. You can’t give these people visas or sit at the negotiating table with them,” Ruslana told euronews.

“It’s the opinion of ordinary Ukrainians who have been ignored for two months, who have been tortured. Also the laws which have been passed – it’s unfortunately a shameful page in Ukraine’s history. Yanukovych is a dictator in the heart of Europe,” she added.

Two months of anti-government protests have been sparked by President Yanukovych’s refusal to sign a landmark Ukraine-EU trade deal in November. Yanukovych may favour closer ties with Russia instead.
