US: new execution method in Ohio causes controversy

Convicted murderer and rapist Dennis McGuire has been executed in the US state of Ohio using a new two-drug method.

McGuire, 53, received a combination of the sedative modazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone.

The use of the drugs has sparked controversy. McGuire reportedly died more than 20 minutes after the drugs were administered.

A Dayton Daily News journalist, who was present at the execution, described McGuire “convulsing, gagging and struggling to breathe” for several minutes.

McGuire’s attorney Allen Bohnert called the execution “a failed, agonising experiment”.

The prison that carried out the execution has not commented on the report.
