Police in Delhi have launched an investigation into an alleged gang rape of a Danish tourist.
The 51-year-old woman was attacked after she lost her way and stopped a group of men to ask for directions to her hotel. Police say she was robbed and raped at knife point.
It is reported the woman left the country on a flight to Copenhagen on Wednesday morning and refused to undergo a medical test. This latest attack highlights the problem of sexual violence in India after a number of similar attacks.
“It’s very unfortunate that such incidents happen in our country and this shows India in a very poor light and people comment that India has become the rape capital of this world,” said Shobha Ojha, the Ruling Congress Party leader said responding to news of the attack.
The gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus two years ago sparked international outrage. The incident led to the government tightening laws on sexual violence.
Six men were jailed for life for the attack on a Swiss tourist last March.
