Norwegian newcomers Stavanger Oilers won the Continental Cup at the first time of asking on Sunday.
The Oilers lifted the title after they thrashed Italian champions Asiago Hockey 7-2 and later in the day holders Donbass Dontesk lost to French hosts Rouen Dragons in their final round robin game.
Donbass needed to beat Rouen to assure back-to-back titles and got off to a great start when Yevgeni Dadonov opened up the scoring.
Marc-André Thinel leveled matters for the home side before Finland’s Tuomas Kiiskinen put the Ukrainians back into the lead.
Thinel was once again on hand for the French side to tie the game at two apiece.
In a thrilling encounter Clay Wilson handed Donbass a 3-2 lead but Julien Desrosiers made it all square at three all sending the match into overtime.
Neither side could break the deadlock and a shootout was needed to decide the winner.
Rouen keeper Fabrice Lhenry was red hot in goal and saved all four shots from Donbass.
France international Anthony Rech then stepped up and confidently scored the winner and hand Rouen a 4-3 win and deny Donbass continental glory.
