Hundreds of Venezuelans paid their final respects to a popular actress and former Miss Venezuela. Monica Spear and her ex-husband Thomas Henry Berry were buried on Friday.
The couple was shot dead during a car robbery attempt last Monday.
Speaking to reporters at the funeral, Spear’s brother, Ricardo, described his sister as someone who cared deeply about her community:
“It gave me great joy to read her goals for 2014, which coincidentally she had written on 28 December. The first thing she wrote was that she ‘wanted to be kind and humble’, just like that, for me that was a big deal, impressive,” he said.
“And the second one was, she wanted to be a light wherever she went, and then, you know, that’s when you realise how important it was for her, how important it was for her to contribute to her community,” he added.
Seven suspects have been detained in relation to the double homicide in a country with one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Venezuela has more killings every year than war-ravaged Iraq, whose population is about the same.
The pair’s five-year-old daughter survived the attack.
