Toure named African footballer of the year

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been named African Player of the Year at the Confederation of African Football’s gala award ceremony held in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday.

The Ivory Coast international beat Nigerian John Obi Mikel while Toure’s compatriot Didier Drogba had to settle for third place.

Toure, the only African to be included on the 23-man shortlist for Fifa’s World Footballer of the Year, becomes the third player to win the accolade for three consecutive years, with Samuel Eto’o claiming the prize between 2003 and 2005 and Ghana’s Abedi Pele taking the award from 1991-93.
