After weeks of speculation, former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at Real Madrid until 2016.
The 32 year old, who joined los Merengues in 2009, had been linked with a return to Anfield in recent months, while Chelsea were also believed to be tracking the Spain international.
According to reports Alonso will miss Sunday’s trip to Espanyol in la Liga as he is yet to recover fully from damage to an eardrum he sustained when playing against Valencia last month.
