The Astana Pro cycling team on Wednesday officially presented its riders for the 2014 season.
The presentation took place in Brescia, Italy and among those presented were the key new signings of Lieuwe Westra of the Netherlands and Italian Michele Scarponi.
The team’s general manager Alexander Vinokourov made his objectives clear for this year saying: “I am happy with the 2013 Giro dI’talia victory, some good finishes in the Vuelta as well as some fine victories by Vincenzo Nibali. I am satisfied with my first year as general manager but the objective for 2014 as the team and our sponsors know well is to beat Team Sky to the Tour de France title.”
In order to achieve that goal Astana will be counting on their team leader Nibali, who echoed Vinokourov’s principle objective in winning cycling’s most prestigious race this season.
But Astana will be targeting other titles this campaign and will be pinning their Giro hopes of 2011 winner Scarponi, who has joined the team on a one-year deal following several seasons at Lampre.
