The German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosts many a prestigious world cup winter sports event each year but there’s one amateur – but equally thrilling – annual sporting occasion that grabs the attention of the masses – The Horn Sledge race.
The 45th edition of the race saw some 90 teams of four competitors blast down the steep one kilometre piste on wooden sledges that can reach up to 90 kilometres an hour.
This type of sledge was originally use to transport bales of hay or wood from the mountains into the valleys – a tradition some attempted during the race much to the delight of the 3 000 people that turned out to watch the event in the Bavarian town.
