Nastase returns to jail on bribery conviction

He had only been out of prison for a few months, but now former Romanian prime minister, Adrian Nastase is heading back there after a court found him guilty of taking bribes.

Nastase, who shot himself in a suicide attempt in 2012 to avoid going to jail the first time around, has been given four years by Romania’s top court. He is the only post-Communist leader to be jailed anywhere, but one of only a handful of convictions in a country slammed by the EU along with Bulgaria as being undermined by organised crime and corruption.

Observers say the verdict is welcome however as a sign the authorities are getting tough about stamping out corruption, and should be read as a warning to others to clean up their acts.
