Rubbish collection has taken a holiday in Lisbon

Refuse collectors in the Portuguese capital are striking over budget cuts and the city’s use of outside contractors. Piles of rotting rubbish fill many of the city’s streets.

The General Direction of Health (DGS) has issued a statement recommending local residents to keep their rubbish at home, where practicable, for public health reasons.

It will be at least another week before the garbage is gone.
