Nine years on: Thailand remembers Asian tsunami

Hundreds of Thais and foreigners gathered in Phuket to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the devastating Asian tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people.

Those attending the memorial service laid flowers and lit candles in remembrance of the victims of one of the the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded.

An earthquake under the Indian Ocean triggered the huge tsunami in December 2004. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country.

An estimated 5,400 people were killed in Thailand.
