General Assembly dedicated to the life and memory of Nelson Mandela
The late Nelson Mandela embodied many of the ideals of the United Nations, so it is no wonder that the life and work of the former South African President and champion of peace are an enduring source of inspiration for many of the world body’s staff, beginning with the Secretary-General himself.
The 193-member General Assembly held a special meeting today to honor the memory of the man affectionately known as Madiba, who emerged from 27 years of imprisonment to become South Africa’s first black President and is known worldwide for his compassionate yet determined efforts to dismantle the country’s legacy of apartheid.
