Argentina’s newly-crowned league champions San Lorenzo have paid a visit to their most famous fan – the pope!
Players and officials from the Buenos Aires club travelled to Rome to meet Pope Francis.
Francis was born in Argentina and is the club’s most celebrated supporter.
The pope met the delegation in St Peter’s Square before a 30 minute chat in private.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, club vice president Marcelo Tinelli said the pope had told them of the happiness their victory had brought him.
He added: “The happiness he felt over us coming here three days after winning the championship and bringing him the trophy, he said when he saw us that we are crazy to have come here so quickly but it was something that us, with Matias Lammens, the president, and the entire delegation, management and players together, made a silent promise that if we got the title we would come and present the most famous fan of San Lorenzo in the world with the trophy that we won.”
They clinched the title just days earlier on December 15.
