Joan Fontaine, one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 50s, has died in her sleep in Carmel, California. She was 96.

She became a star via Alfred Hitchcock, the British director using her for his first American film, “Rebecca” alongside Laurence Olivier. In all she made 30 films, winning an Oscar for Hitchcock’s “Suspicion” with Cary Grant.
