The Boca Junior Fan day is supposed to be a day of celebrations for thousands of supporters of one of Argentina’s most celebrated clubs.
On Thursday the Plaza of the Republic in downtown Buenos Aires was awash with the club’s yellow and blue colours.
Flags were waving and a few firecrackers set off.
However, in what has become all too familiar scenes from the south American country, the firecrackers were soon swapped for rocks, stones and any other missiles on hand as the celebrations turned to clashes with local police, who responded with tear gas.
According to reports at least two protesters and five police officers were injured in the violence.
The club’s Fan Day erupted into chaos last year when approximately 300 fans looted shops and clashed with police.
