Schlierenzauer extends overall lead

Defending World Cup champion Gregor Schlierenzauer held his nerve to claim the third World cup event of the season in Lillehammer on Saturday.

The Austrian sensation snatched the lead after a superb first round jump of 105.5 meters before fending off his opponents with a final leap of 97 meters.

This win sees Schlierenzauer extend his lead atop the overall standings, 41 points ahead of Japan’s Taku Takeuchi who had to settle for second place with 99 metres and 100.5 metres.

Germany’s Richard Freitag, who was returning to competition after a 10 week absence due to a fatigue fracture of a metatarsal bone, took bronze.

In the women’s event, Japan’s Sara Takanashi recorded a combined total of 286 points to secure the title.

Daniela Iraschko-Stolz and Gianina Ernst tied for second, 16 points adrift while Carina Vogt and Jacqueline Seifriedsberger finished fourth and fifth respectively.
